Public media in the service of democracy - I International Conference on Public Media

On the 4-5th June 2014 in Krakow the I International Conference on Public Media "Public media in the service of democracy: Polish experience compared to Europe” took place, organized by the Jagiellonian University together with the National Broadcasting Council. Conference received the patronage from the President of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski.
Among the conference participants there were representatives of the media industry, scholars, politicians and media experts.

The event started on the 4th of June with the scholars debate titled “Towards the future – public media facing the challenges of modern world”.

In a morning session on the 5th of June the discussion panel took place, surrounding public media development possibilities and their tasks in the future. In the discussion participated, among others, Ingrid Deltenre - the Director General of European Broadcasting Union, prof. Uwe Hasebrink from Hans Bredov Institute and the Hamburg University, prof. Paula Cordeiro from the University of Lisbon and prof. Guy Starkey from Sunderland University in England. Introduction to the panel session was conducted by Robert Suarez Candel from the European Broadcasting Union Media Intelligence, who presented the assumptions of EBU strategic document,  Vision 2020.

In the afternoon session, conducted by the National Broadcasting Council, was provided Media Roundtable - "The role of public media in Poland, their social functions in the terms of directions and tasks set out in the EBU strategic document - Vision 2020" (at 2:00 PM).

The I International Conference on Public Media is a continuation of the Media Roundtable tradition which was held in Gdańsk in 90’s as well as conferences organized in Cracow in the years 2000-2005. In those events participated the representatives of the National Broadcasting Council, the Polish Television SA, the Polish Radio SA and media experts. The conferences were devoted to the issues surrounding the role and transformation of the public media, as well as the tasks that they should perform. On the 7th of March 2013 HM Rector of the Jagiellonian University, prof. Wojciech Nowak MD, Ph.D. and the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, Jan Dworak signed a letter of intent reopening this international initiative.
